CLUB SCHEDULED FIELD TRIPS & REPORTS

We have a new field trip chairman - watch for new scheduled club field trips and reports....

July 28, 2008
JXR MINE in Wilkes County - GA

We had round fifteen eager rock hounds on this trip to JXR Mine. The morning dig was pleasant but by two in the afternoon it was some kind-of-HOT!  Everyone found something, but nothing that was outstanding...most of the amethyst was scattered on top of the ground.  The night before the area received a rain and washed the exposed amethyst so it was nice and shiny for us to find - that made it easy picking....

A special thanks to our club president, Bill Mayer for organizing the field trip to Summerville, GA to dig for lace agate. We had a great turn-out and the weather was perfect for digging.  Everyone who went left with some great rocks!!!!  This was an official D.M.C. field trip of the Ga. Mineral Society.

New Riverside Ochre Mine

Cartersville, GA

A special thanks to Lorri Dee Dukes for oranizing a trip to the New Riverside Ochre Mine to search for barite, magnesium, iron ore, and archeocyathids.

We had an enthusiastic group of members attend this field trip on a wonderful fall day - each able to bring home a 500 million year old archeocyathid!  The tour and dig was given by Stan Bearden of the New River Ochre Mine, Cartersville, GA

Amethyst was found by Jorie Billingsly.  It measures 2.5" tall and was about 16 feet below grade.  It was sitting by itself in a crack in the rock, covered with sticky clay...
